Strengths:   broad federation, privacy controls
Weaknesses:   resource hungry on the server
Details:   I've been using friendica for about 9 months now, and have even now installed it on a server for myself, and contributed to some plugins. It's fun! It federates and interacts with more other networks than any other such application, thus working not only as a social networking platform, but as a powerful publishing platform, news aggregator, and social networking organizer, with great privacy controls, groups, events, galleries, chat...everything you want from a social network, and more, AND there's a great community building around it.

Great software! It just works!
Written by Arto Arto from USA   (Monday, May 07, 2012)
Strengths:   Easy to install, stable, incredibly helpful community, fast development cycle
Weaknesses:   Account exports and imports would be the icing on the cake.
Details:   I have been using Friendica for over three months now, and it has been an amazing experience. Unlike Facebook, Diaspora and Twitter, controlling who gets to read my posts is trivial with the built-in access control feature. All I have to do is click on a padlock, select from the list of contacts who I want to share my post with, and that's it! Another neat feature is the IMAP email connector. Basically, I enter the IMAP server info and my mail box gets pulled into my Friendica wall every 15 minutes or so. Though I can see my emails on the Wall, no one else can, due to default privacy settings for the connector. Most recently, I've started using the chat feature, which was one of the convenient things about using Facebook. Now I can connect with all my Friendica friends, Facebook contacts, and any other xmpp handle.

Full decentralization

Strengths:   decentralization, easy installation, feature-rich, stable
Weaknesses:   account migration is still pending
Details:   I have been using Friendica for about nine months. Unlike other open-source offerings, Friendica really does offer effective decentralization, because installation is a breeze (doesn't require any geek knowledge). There's a landscape of small servers out there already and it seems to be growing very fast.
