MediaWiki v1.10.1 Codango Lab Review By: Cody Swoyer December 14th, 2007 |
Synopsis
MediaWiki is a big player in the world of wiki applications, and we found out why first hand. MediaWiki was a breeze to install for our Labs, and once we were past the installation, we found our Wiki waiting to be filled with user generated content (not of the spam variety, that is). We found the user and administrative interface friendlier than a politician on Election Day. However, administrators had best prepare themselves to dive into the code if they want to really customize their site, as MediaWiki is lacking any type of easy to use interface for changing your Wiki layout. For the unfamiliar, the task could quickly become daunting with the lack of a strong community center and (sometimes overwhelmingly) vast amount of documentation. Even so, we found the solid Wiki default template and sturdy security were more than enough to keep our sample Wiki running smoothly while we got intimately familiar with the application. There is nothing as satisfying as getting your hands good and dirty, and that’s just what our Labs did. Needless to say, we're not just satisfied, but pretty darn pleased. Overall, we found that MediaWiki has got it nailed when it comes to providing a powerful tool for wiki creation and maintenance.
