It's an Ok provider
Written by Majin Niels from Holland   (Monday, March 17, 2003)
Writer is with: http://www21.brinkster.com/majinniels
Strengths:   No banners at all
Weaknesses:   Speed
Details:   im using an free brinkster account and its fine with me. Im creating the Asp pages in MM Dreamweaver UD 4 and everything works fine. Created ones the database connections and im using it all the time only updating the pages. Sometimes the servers aren't responding are timing out, but MM_DW_UD is not creating the best quality of asp so that could be the problem. I started to update/reengineer the pages to asp.net to check if performance will increase.

A DOT.NET site - for free?

Details:   What do people expect for free? I wanted to see my DOTNET, SQL server database, multi-aspx application running outside my own machine which uses IIS/XP_Pro/LocalHost. First blow was that Access is free and SQL server is chargeable (and needs them to set it up for you). I simply changed my localhost to programmatically use either Access or SQL Server which is useful experience? It was great to see it running on an ISP server first time. Have now hit problems because my application hangs on Brinkster but is OK at home (in the UK) - left wondering if it is diabolically slow or not working at all. Brinkster has given me a risk-free passport into dotnet which could cost at least £20 per month in the UK (that was the cheapest I found and was in addition to a normal subscription). I only upload localhost versions that are working at home for verification - I would not recommend doing the development online at Brinkster. Remember that there are absolute beginners on Brinkster some of whom are producing infinite loops and every possible error and inefficiency for them to deal with? For the beginner or the guy without money to spend this site is perfect. Uploading is a bit of pain because the progress bar does not work as they planned. However uploads of my 700k Access mdb file get there within 7 minutes on a modem running typically at 45k. The asp files take very little time at all. No hesitation in giving it 5 stars for free. Would be 1 or 2 stars if I was paying. My next decision is whether to pay for FTP support and Email and a hoped-for improvement in response times? Feel Brinkster deserve a try but be warned from my experience they ignore emails from "free" users. MY directory disappeared once and I used their automatic email to request it was restored. The directory was back an hour later (when I checked, so could have been minutes) and they emailed me next day to say try it!

Strengths:   good for HTML
Weaknesses:   Bad for ASP
Details:   they use an odd file system so it is very difficult to get your connectstring to work with your database.... Its nearly imposible... Its a fantastic site for HTML... no banners and WONDERFUL service... No FTP,,, rough DB connections makes for bad ASP servers.... :( I am actually here looking for a place to relpace my brinkster account.

Details:   Brinkster has the best tech support I have ever seen! I have been with them since February 2002. The setup is simple and quick. The free account offers a very good web-based file manager, their database manager needs help, however. They have a code bank which has tons of scripts and code snippets that you can add to your pages. The speed is very, very fast and I have NEVER seen my site down! I upgraded to the General SE account and got FTP access for only $4/month. I will soon upgrade to the Premium X4 account. I HIGHLY recommend this host to anyone who needs an ASP host. I searched for a long time and tried MANY hosts but Brinkster is by far the best - especially since there are no banner ads. Try my site and see how fast it is: http://jsment.com. Good luck!

Not Bad, Not Good, But Free

Details:   No banners, popup, or adds which is great. Also, thirty megs of space is plenty, but many features are blocked unless you pay. No CDONTS, which allows you to send email via asp. You cannot put any multimedia files up.(except for graphics) There is no FTP, and the web based uploader is pretty crappy. Also, server and thus your page is down about fifty percent of the time. But, if you're just looking for a basic page, nothing fancy, it may work.

Details:   Well, I was a bit reluctant. One can make so many mistakes in setting up an asp programme, so one should take care with critique. But after having lost one week trying to run just some small samples with brinkster, I'd say that Mark is perfectly right. You can't get a UD programme running (a wonderful instrument to create asp programmes!) if you don't have a lot of knowledge and are able to adapt it to brinksters special conditions (that, moreover, are not being explained openly). The large discussion forum is of not much help either. One tells you that you have to use +es, the other says no &s and some more or less ". The examples even have some " or ' or / too much, what a "normal" UD-user might not recognise. In short: A waste of time.
